A record number 1525 new NBCTs were given notification of their status in January of this year.  The fifty-seven given library/media certification join 340 other librarians/media personnel across the state of North Carolina bringing the number of library/media NBCTs to 397.

The National Board Certification process consists of a portfolio and assessment exercises.  The portfolio consists of three instructional entries and an entry of documented accomplishments.  Library media coordinators must address classroom-based entries dealing with instructional collaboration, fostering an appreciation of literature, and integration of instructional technologies.  The documented accomplishments entry should highlight those activities or endeavors that contribute to student learning.  The assessment center exercises allow library media coordinators to show their knowledge in six areas:  organizational management, ethical and legal tenets, technologies, collection development, information literacy, and knowledge of literature.

NCSLMA Presents the AASL Regional Institute "Collaborative Leadership"

Come and join us for an opportunity to develop your leadership skills and be an innovator in your school.   Betty Bankhead will guide you through this one-day workshop that provides you with an opportunity to increase your understanding of the components of leadership, identify your own leadership skills and professional priorities, and apply leadership strategies to the challenges we face in our schools and our profession. You will have time and opportunities to connect with other professionals and establish networks to work together to effect change.

Betty Bankhead has over 30 years of experience as a teacher and a library media specialist. She served for twenty-one years as the director of a large school library media program in Colorado.  As coordinator, she provided the leadership for the development of a collaborative library program that integrated information literacy and technology standards into all areas of the curriculum.

In 2002, Betty was selected to author the first leadership institute for AASL. Since that time she has presented the institute for fifteen state affiliates and school districts across the country. Betty Bankhead is the recipient of three national awards for computing, instructional leadership, and public relations programming in school libraries. While serving as coordinator of the Cherry Creek High School library program, she co-authored Write It! A Guide for Research, as well as many articles for national and state journals.

Information Power and "Collaborative Leadership"
The AASL Regional Institute: Collaborative Leadership ties into two of the ideas -- collaboration and leadership -- that underlie the vision of library media programs presented in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning. Each is integral to every aspect of the library media program and every component of the school library media specialist's role.
Topic Outline

The cost for the Institute is $50 and includes lunch and all materials.   The Institute will be held in two locations for your convenience.  You may choose to attend in Raleigh on May 1st or in Asheville on May 3rd.   Registration must be postmarked no later than April 12th.   Space is LIMITED.  Registration is limited to NCSLMA members.  (Membership forms are on the NCSLMA website).   Please register early to guarantee your spot.
